Ph.D. candidate Thedin receives AIAA Award

11/1/2018

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Regis Thedin, Ph.D. candidate in aerospace engineering, was recently awarded the John Leland Atwood Graduate Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

The Atwood Graduate Award, sponsored by endowments from Rockwell and The Boeing Company, recognizes a student actively engaged in research in the areas covered by the technical committees of AIAA.

Thedin’s research, conducted under the advisement of Sven Schmitz, associate professor of engineering, focuses on atmospheric turbulence effects on ship airwakes. Specifically, Thedin is investigating these effects and analyzing the consequences to the dynamics of a helicopter flying in this region, as if the vehicle was landing or taking off from the ship. His goal is to develop higher fidelity models for flight simulators, whereby more realistic simulator models could allow the U.S. Army to better train pilots in extreme and/or hazardous conditions.

He is currently performing additional work for his doctoral degree within the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

Thedin is the vice president of the Penn State chapter of the Vertical Flight Society.
