Dr. Amos passed away suddenly in December, 2006

We received word that Dr. Amos, 72, died suddenly on December 18, 2006 in his native Ghana . A specialist in spacecraft dynamics and control, Prof. Amos attended the prestigious Achimota School in Ghana and received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from McGill University in Canada . He earned his M.S. in Structural Mechanics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from Princeton in 1966. After working in industry and government, including Boeing, the Air Force Office of Scientific research and NASA, he joined the Penn State faculty in 1989, serving as director of graduate admissions for Aerospace Engineering, as well as the department's Director of Graduate Studies. Prof. Amos retired in 1999. At the time of death and consistent with his desire to improve literacy in engineering both in the U.S. and in the developing world, he was teaching mathematics and engineering to students at three universities in Ghana and supervising graduate students as a volunteer for the IFESH (International Foundation for Education and Self-Help) organization. He was the author of several engineering publications. He is survived by three children and a grandson. A memorial service will be held at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Accra , Ghana , followed by burial at the Osu cemetery, Accra on February 17, 2007. Tax-deductible memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Achimota School Fund ( http://www.achimotafund.org ) via the contribution form available at http://www.achimotafund.org/PDF/ACHIFORM.pdf , or by contacting the Achimota Fund, 5004 Cortland Court , Midland , MI 48642 .
